II. DANIEL'S SEVENTIETH WEEK
READ: Daniel 9:24-27 Refer to the chart "Daniel's Seventieth Week"
Daniel 9:24-25
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks:….the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
*The 70 weeks are NOT continuous, but came to a stop at the 69th week. There are 2 parts to verse 25, there are 69 weeks "unto the Messiah" and "70 weeks to anoint the Most Holy". These are weeks of years, so 70 times 7 years. What this is saying is that there are 69 weeks of years unto the Messiah's first coming and 70 to his second coming. This will be the 7 years of Tribulation. There was a decree issued by the Persian king to rebuild Jerusalem in 457 B.C. If we count ahead 483 years (69 weeks x 7 years) brings us to 26 A.D. This is either the beginning or the end of Jesus' ministry. Most scholars believe Jesus was born around 4 B.C.
"After three score and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself" refers to the crucifixion. "The people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary" refers to the Roman emperor Titus who destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The "times of the Gentiles" was inserted between the 69th week and the 70th week.
The 70th week of Daniel is the same time period that John is describing in Revelation the 6th chapter. The 70 weeks pertain only to the Jewish people, and that is what God showed to Daniel.
